Religious people understand the world less, study finds
Religious people are more likely to have a poorer understanding of the world and are more likely to believe objects like rocks and paper have human qualities, scientists say. Researchers at the University of Helsinki compared believers in God or the paranormal to people with autism after finding they tend to struggle to understand the realities of the world around us.

Really? I would've never thought that people who base their entire morality and behavior on the supposed teachings of an imaginary friend in the sky would be disconnected from reality.
Religion by definition is about suppressing critical thinking. They call it "faith". Obviously that's not going to help in dealing with reality,

I thought you were being serious.
I was serious in the sense that people aren't very smart. The part about half being below-average was a tongue-in-cheek remark (it's not even my joke either, I've seen it in one form or another online for a while).
BTW this assumes that the median and the average of the intelligence distribution are the same, which is not necessarily correct, but since everyone uses Gaussians to model intelligence I guess I can do it too :)
