I'm seeing a lot of backlash against things like gay marriage and trans rights recently. I very much believe this is a "flame flickers brightest before it goes out" scenario. The more visible these groups become and the more obvious the trend toward acceptance the more the die hard bigots will react and the less they will be listened to.
This event, the murder of 10 trans women in the US, even probably stuff like the Louisiana shooting... All connected, all terrible, all probably signs that only the most radical will hold onto hope that discrimination will somehow resume.
