Consequence: people begin to withdraw support for said candidate
Result: soon the candidate is unelectable
Conclusion: HRC and DNC play the same game as Trump just not as well
It was HRC's job mange that perception. It also helps when the candidate doesn't have a long history of fuck ups ranging from Veep-like burlesque incompetence to dark shit going back 30 years.
Even if one convinces oneself that the other ticket was made of sugar and spice and all things nice, one would still have to explain why they preferred losing to Trump rather than winning with Sanders.

I'd say the world does operate on reality, it's people that don't.
Posit: a rumor is started climate change isn't real. Consequence: people begin to withdraw support for stopping climate change. Result: the climate becomes inhospitable to the human species (amongst many others). Conclusion: We're all screwed. The planet will recover. People are collectively stupid and act only on behalf of their own short-term interests.
Sanders was a lot more dangerous to them than Trump. Look at the stock market, do you think this would have happened with Sanders? The DNC ensured that both candidates in the election were good for the plutocracy, which is all they care about.
