I think you are almost forced into Google + if you have a gmail address. I tried to cancel google +, but it seems to be mandatory if you wish to use gmail.
Yep you're exactly right. They keep heckling me to fill out my profile and join almost every time I go check my email. I've gotten used to ignoring all that crap.
