It should be clear to voters where information is coming from, and if it’s not transparent or open where it’s coming from, it raises the question of whether we are actually living in a democracy or not.

In the US, the government is bound by strict laws about what data it can collect on individuals. But, for private companies anything goes. Is it unreasonable to see in this the possible beginnings of an authoritarian surveillance state?
The beginnings? This guy must have been living under a rock for the last 10 years.
The problem, though, is not so much the manipulation of the electorate, this has always happened and will always happen in any system where people vote to elect a government. The real problem is that there is, in fact, no real election.
She's a patrician Welsh novelist out to cement a particular public perception. She has to start where the marks are before she can lead them down the garden path. If she started right in assuming the lizard people run our otherwise-perfect, frictionless and equal political system, there'd be nothing left for the last acts. Form; her plot; and the storytelling to convince the plebes that populist election victories are illegitimate consequences of evil, foreign schemes; require her to slowly, slowly, introduce her most masterful and insidious villains. Otherwise the outcome of a democratic referendum cannot be transmuted into 'Fake News,' a term of art for things you'd rather people not know as such.
