In this world, John Wilkes Booth and allies succeeded in assassinating not just Abraham Lincoln, but Vice President Johnson and Secretary of State Seward. In the much more extreme world that follows, America eventually morphs into a fascist dictatorship divided along ethnic lines into new "federal republics".

That's an interesting dystopian take on history. One has to wonder if the "districts" are in any way inspired by The Hunger Games.
The districts, I believe, are actually based on the military districts used after the American Civil War, which divided the former CSA in 5 military districts.
