Exactly my thoughts...
Most of the illegal gold miners (garimpeiros) in northern Brazil have absolutely no respect for human life, and will kill anything they run into. This is not really surprising.
This is really sad and infuriating. Why doesn't the Brazil govt do something about it?
Because they are deep in the jungle and know it really well. They can fight guerrilla style and make any soldiers going after them have a very bad day. I guess getting rid of them is not worth the cost of sending a force large enough to do it.
