I don't know what it is, but there is something odd and spectacular about this photo that makes me think it IS a stage, yet after closer examination it becomes to resemble real life again. Can't put my finger on it...
It's been colorized and I'm pretty sure that the sign has been added via photoshop. That sign owes more to the 1970's than the 1920's. In the 20's, I would expect it to be carved or hand-painted. but if it WERE printed, it would be lithographed onto tin. This looks much more like some form of transfer lettering.
It could be real - but if it is, it would be even stranger than the photo having been altered - probably for someone's website or brochure.
