The big thing for Steam for me is that cross-platform games download to the appropriate platform. I make a point of purchasing games which are Windows / Mac compatible and play it on which ever OS I happen to be on at the time. Hoping GOG will do the same, but didn't see it mentioned in the article or on their site. Anyone know?
In any case, I'm gonna install it and pick up a few games to show support. This is awesome and GOG is awesome for running with it.
I'm not sure if it's automatic or not, but the alternate (Linux, etc) versions should be available when you right-click a game in your library and select Download.
I'm pretty sure it works the way you'd like, though. It'd be silly for them to release an OSX version of the client, and then try and install windows games by default.
No Linux support :(
DRM-free sounds really great though; I hope GOG does a Linux-port too.
The download page's code says beta (I had to look at the source, since I'm in Linux too). Maybe down the line, when they're ready for production, they'll start a Linux beta too.
Maybe a few posts on their forum expressing our wish will help make their mind.
Edit: they have a wishlist on their community page. A vote for a Linux version already exists, don't forget to vote.

I've liked GOG, try to use them when I can. Its good for us as consumers for Steam to have some competition.
