Oh my god, The 37th Mandala! It's written by Marc Laidlaw, the guy who wrote the story to Half-Life. I picked it up at random, and the sucker has stuck with me ever since. There's just nothing like it. Best way I can describe it is as a combination of Clive Barker, H.P. Lovecraft, and Peter Straub (especially "Koko", another fine horror novel).
