Sources & Image attribution
Sources
Some discussion about sources and image attribution has come up. Sometimes this is quick and easy to do, sometimes it is difficult. In the case of the image I used for this snap, I am unaware of the source. Using tineye I never found anything substantive. Whats to be done?
Obviously I would remove an image if asked to, but is there any other guideline in such cases?
According to the FAQ:
g) Sources:
You are allowed to enter up to 10 URLs as sources. For images, this is highly recommended if you are not the original photographer, designer or creator.

I think (almost 100% sure) it's essentially considered good etiquette to share sources if they are available, but this is not an enforced rule and even the sources tab is optional. People are free to post unaccredited images if they wish to, but its extremely welcome that you DO in fact credit the creator of the content.
I think it would be a good idea that, when you added a source, there was also a text field so that you could say what that source related to. e.g. thumbnail courtesy of wikipedia.org.
The policy I have developed over the past week is this...
1. If the thumbnail is fetched from the website I'm linking to, I put the onus on THAT website to properly source the image.
2. If I don't like any of the images that the snap fetches automatically, and I use another website to provide an image (like my spaceport snap earlier), I put the website I got it from as the source.
3. If I created the image, I don't put a source.
