Neither Alexis nor I created reddit to be a bastion of free speech, but rather as a place where open and honest discussion can happen

    Oh snap!

So which is it? How do you have honest discussion without free speech?

I don't mind honest and open rules, provided that they're internally consistent and consistently enforced. Reddit is random. You can be banned from one sub for just subscribing to another, shadow banned without warning or explanation, yet hate speech and harassment are common. Completely chaotic and arbitrary.

Honestly, I don't really have a problem with this. Individual subreddits should be able to create pretty much whatever rules they want. Its the site-wide bans on people and content that becomes a problem.

People in /r/offmychest were banning anyone subscribed to /r/fatpeoplehate-- didn't have to post in either sub, but being subbed to /r/fatpeoplehate was enough to get you banned from offmychest.

I disagree that your subscription should get you banned from a sub. I could see behavior (posting in a sub) but subscribing just means you read it.
