I think as the desktop distros keep getting better, more and more institutions are going to move away from Windows Desktop. We've already seen some nation-state governments move to Linux and American Department of Defence uses it extensively because, with the exception of a compromised compiler, they know exactly what's in a piece of software when they put it into production.
Microsoft has been shooting itself in the foot for over ten years. If they can't pull it together, then there is no other choice then for something to take it's place. Linux is already widely used by professionals from many different areas. If that can shift to the average consumer, then it's only a matter of time.
Microsoft has always been shooting itself in the foot. They're just getting better at aiming and using larger caliber weapons ;)
Linux is a superb OS. I've been using it since the 1.0 kernel and it's gotten better with time. While it did take Apple to get Unix to the desktop, Linux isn't too far behind.
I agree completely. Ten years ago I threw in the towel concerning Windows and installed a distro..I never went back. But I see Microsoft as having a harder future as there will be more and more choices out there for people.
I can't recall I programming job where I didn't need some level of Linux skills.
