I can't get upset that what amounts to a season pass costs $45, just because someone else will get the base game and expansion for less than what it ended up costing me. Charging newcomers base+expansion isn't going to get many new players. Ongoing development costs money. Support the development, or don't, if you think it's not worth it. I'll be buying it.

I would agree except for that fact that other major games make you buy the expansions (WoW a prime example). Sure there's a pack you can buy that has the first 4 in it (I think), but that's because the base price of the game has gone down. Elite: Dangerous' base game has not. Plus... the concept of the planetary landings was to be an optional expansion. At least that's what was originally said. So players that opted not to buy the expansion to do everything space oriented without restriction... while players that had the expansion could land. A pay-wall, if you will.

But when you say new guys get the expansion basically by default... you've actively punished the current userbase. You've gone from $60 base game with optional $60 expansion to those really interested or loving the game... to $60 base game and expansion with a $60 fee for not waiting till after release to buy it. That's not "funding ongoing development", that's not keeping to what you said and double dipping on the huge wave of new sales you just got with the Xbox release. Not a great tactic, imo, especially considering the current state of the base game that is still horribly riddle with bugs that have been reported and shown for months. Some things of Wings still don't work correctly and Powerplay is still a giant buggy mess as well as a letdown.

EDIT: Basically, if it wasn't included with the new game, it would fall into the standard rules of other expansions and DLCs. That is the primary point of contention and bad practice, IMO.

Yeah, I can see that point of view. I liken it to a game like the Borderlands series. You buy it, you buy the expansion DLCs or season pass. Then after a while they bundle it all up in a GOTY edition for half the price of the base game. Anybody that waited got a better deal than you did. But you got to play it all when it was shiny and new.

Will they lose some goodwill by doing this? Certainly. Looks like a cash grab.

Will a lot of people bitch about it, then buy it anyway because it looks too awesome to pass up? Pretty sure that's what they are counting on.

The expansions will likely be on sale later on, if you want to wait. Or wait until the game is finished, then buy them all for the bundled price. But then you won't get to play all the new stuff for a while.

People are very touchy concerning money and they don't think straight. Add to this the low quality of Reedit discussion and you have a troll-fest.
