I live in Australia and even though John Howard (former Prime Minister) did a lot of things I didn't like, he did step up after the massacre in Tasmania. I will be eternally grateful for the hard line he took with guns. I can't imagine living in a country where little kids get gunned down at school and nothing changes.
The problem is that you can't put the genie back in the bottle and there's so many guns floating around now that you can't go back. I think a ban would be pretty ineffectual and not stymie any criminal actions but would just punish law abiding citizens instead.

I'm an American, and I own a gun just to protect myself from gun nuts. I shouldn't have this fear in a truly civilized society.
