I live in Australia and even though John Howard (former Prime Minister) did a lot of things I didn't like, he did step up after the massacre in Tasmania. I will be eternally grateful for the hard line he took with guns. I can't imagine living in a country where little kids get gunned down at school and nothing changes.

The problem is that you can't put the genie back in the bottle and there's so many guns floating around now that you can't go back. I think a ban would be pretty ineffectual and not stymie any criminal actions but would just punish law abiding citizens instead.

I'm an American, and I own a gun just to protect myself from gun nuts. I shouldn't have this fear in a truly civilized society.

I'd hate to have to do that :( and I'm sorry you have to.

There's no freedom in having to own a gun

I think so many Australians shake their heads at gun violence in other countries. The genie analogy does not hold true. Gun buy backs, amnesties and penalties for illegal firearms have worked in Australia (and other countries). Yes we still have illegal guns and occasional shootings but the numbers speak for themselves. And those who have legitimate need for a firearm are not hampered-plenty of farmers, hunters and sporting shooters going about their business safely and responsibly. The laws were changed because the parliament is not held to ransome by lobby groups.
