I got the red/yellow/green scheme idea from red lights. They're pretty universal (all drivers are required to know the meanings of the colors) but, there's no reason a suitably clever person can code up a colorblind friendly schema as well (for the record, i'm a little red/green colorblind as well).
Alternatively, one could have white on the left, gray in the middle, and black on the right. All normal posts would have a gray background. Lighter colors equal more interest. Fade to black for stuff you don't care about that much.
