This sounds like a terrible idea, I know they're going after the developing market with a cheap phone, but I don't know how making their own OS from androids is going to make that cheaper, considering that android is free?

I sounds like the main difference is they're going to use their own services instead of google services, which is similar to what Amazon has done with the Kindle Fire. My guess is considering how potentially huge the developing country market could be, their play is to make money from their store and much not money or even take a loss on the phone itself. It makes me wonder what sort of pricing they will have in their store to make comodity app buying viable in those places. Would it be even worth it for someone to develop apps if the price needs to be less than, say, $1.

Other companies are jumping on this developing market strategy as well. Mozilla announced its $25 phone for the developing world: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-26316265
