Fleeting Wonders: Millions of Balls Saving Los Angeles From Drought
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Shade Ball Cover Project rolled to a halt, rounding off years of work. With a shout of "shade balls away!" Los Angeles city officials overturned a row of sacks and sent 20,000 of the jet black objects cascading down into the Los Angeles Reservoir. The new recruits joined those from previous releases (which have been occurring weekly for over a year), and raised the total ball count to 96 million. They now blanket the entire surface of the 175-acre basin.

Anyone know what those things are made of?
Another article said they're made of "polythene" which is probably the author's misspelling of polyethylene - a relatively inexpensive and food-safe plastic with good UV stability, especially in black. Same general material that's used to make saran wrap and plastic grocery bags.
Aren't we supposed to be trying to pull back on making stuff like plastic grocery bags?

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just released one or two really big balls instead of 96 million smaller balls? Government waste at work, people. /s
