FOR AMERICANS, Mark Twain is something akin to gravity, a massive and foundational force whose magnificence has worn off through familiarity.
Worn off? Are you kidding? I was first introduced to Twain thirty years ago and I still get chills when I read something from him.
Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven.
If you read his essays you will find, besides his adventures falling off of bicycles, his hatred of American conduct in the Philippines and of the church. My kind of guy.
