Can someone explain why Scientific American would have a difficult time posting a picture from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Couldn't they just credit it and move on? Or is it because the magazine is a purchased item?

I get the impression the author didn't have time to seek out express, written permission from the studio to satisfy some stodgy editor's expectation.
