This is not "tomorrow". It started in the 80s. The difference is that now the democratic process threw a wrench in their plans by not putting their preselected person in power. So they're unleashing their power to eliminate the democratic system that made that happen, and as they've learned from history, the best motivator for our hypercomfortable, dumb society is fear.
I'm not a huge fan of democracy, but I do kind of like some of the freedoms that they've worked so hard to destroy for decades (like freedom of speech, or freedom of thought). As the article suggests, the only real way out of this is either bloody revolution (fat chance of that, pun intended), or, what I think is most likely, a Malthusian catastrophe due to destruction of our natural resources. The one thing that does not give a shit about money in our world is nature.
