There is no mystery here. The vast majority of consumers are absolute morons. My friend was shopping for headphones for his wife last Christmas. We went to Best Buy and naturally were drawn to the massive Beats display. I picked up a set, checked them out, said, "These things are fucking junk" and we proceeded to buy a set of Sennheiser (sp?) headphones.
I wouldn't necessarily call them garbage but they definitely aren't worth the price tag. Is it wrong that I judge people who wear beats?
