Poachers kill rhino for his horn at French zoo
A rhino has been shot dead by poachers at a zoo in France in what is believed to be the first such incident in Europe. Keepers found Vince, a four-year-old white rhino, in his enclosure at Thoiry Zoo on Tuesday morning. One of his horns had been hacked off with a chainsaw, police said. The African rhino's horn commands high prices on the black market, with about 100 killed every month in the wild. However, this is thought to be the first time poachers have targeted a rhino living in a European zoo.

Dade City zoo ordered to stop letting tourists swim with tigers
The United States Department of Agriculture has ordered Dade City's Wild Things to end its tiger cub swimming encounters and pay a $21,000 fine for exposing the animals to "rough or excessive public handling." The order, issued Feb. 15 and effective March 22, found the zoo's swim program broke the law when it allowed tigers to be harmed during handling and exposed people to dangerous conditions four times between September 2011 and October 2012.

Critically endangered black rhino baby born at Cincinnati Zoo
The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has a new baby black rhino, Kendi. Mom Seyia gave birth to the calf on Monday. The staff voted to name the calf Kendi, which means “the loved one” in Swahili. It's the first baby black rhino at the Cincinnati Zoo since 1999. Before then, 16 black rhino calves have been born there. Dad Faru came to Cincinnati two years ago from Atlanta, where he sired one calf, as a potential mate for Seyia.

13 monkeys die in fire at UK safari park attraction
Officials say 13 monkeys have died in a fire at a safari park in England, marking the second major fire at an animal attraction in the last two weeks. The fire started early Tuesday morning in the Patas monkey house at Woburn Safari Park, located 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of London. Paris zoo evacuated after 52 baboons escape enclosure
Fifty-two baboons escaped on Friday from their enclosure at the Paris zoological park in Vincennes, on the southeastern outskirts of the French capital, according to reports. The zoo has been evacuated, police have arrived and three marksmen armed with hypodermic guns are at the scene. The latest reports suggest that all but four have now returned to their enclosure after being caught "in a net", according to police sources.

First UK polar bear cub in 25 years emerges
The first polar bear cub to be born in the UK for 25 years has emerged at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland's Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig. Previously, the birth had only been confirmed by high-pitched noises heard from the maternity den. The cub was born in the week before Christmas, after its mother Victoria mated with Arktos, one of two male polar bears at the park. Victoria's enclosure has been closed to the public.

World's Last Male Northern White Rhino Dead
The world's last male northern white rhino has died, the Kenyan conservancy taking care of it said, leaving only two of its subspecies alive in the world. "It is with great sadness that Ol Pejeta Conservancy and the Dvůr Králové Zoo announce that Sudan, the world's last male northern white rhino, age 45, died at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya on March 19, 2018," Ol Pejeta said in a statement.

Kangaroo at China’s Fuzhou Zoo dies after visitors throw rocks at it to make it jump
A kangaroo has died in a Chinese zoo after people threw objects at it in an attempt to get it to hop. Visitors to Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian Province had been trying to get a response from kangaroos by throwing bricks and concrete chunks. A veterinary surgeon said the 12-year-old female marsupial died from a ruptured kidney after being hit. Separately, a five-year-old male suffered minor injuries from the projectiles that were intended to get the marsupials up on their hind legs...
