Mystery of Weird Hum Heard Around the World Solved
Mysterious seismic hums detected around the world were likely caused by an unusual geologic event — the rumblings of a magma-filled reservoir deep under the Indian Ocean, a new study finds. These odd hums were an unconventional geologic birth announcement. A few months after the sounds rippled around the Earth, a new underwater volcano was born off the coast of the island of Mayotte, located between Madagascar and Mozambique in the Indian Ocean.

Iceland volcano and glacier are releasing huge amounts of methane, scientists discover
Huge amounts of methane are being released from a glacier connected to Katla—one of Iceland’s largest and most active volcanoes. Researchers found that up to 41 tonnes of methane is released through meltwater from the Sólheimajökull glacier every day over the summer months. The study, published in Scientific Reports, is the first to show methane is released from glaciers on such a large scale.

Huge Icelandic volcano set to erupt 'dwarfing 2010 ash cloud'
Scientists have warned that a huge volcano in Iceland is about to erupt, dwarfing the explosion that disrupted air travel across the world eight years ago. Katla, described as “highly hazardous”, has been releasing a massive amount of carbon dioxide – a clear indication that its magma chambers are filling up fast. Researchers believe its eruption could overshadow that of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010 – which caused a giant ash cloud that effectively grounded all European air travel.

Hawaii volcanic eruption that created a new peninsula could last as long as 2 years
The eruption of Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano has displaced Big Island residents, sent molten rock hurtling into a sightseeing boat and spewed enough lava to create a whole new peninsula. And it’s only just started, relative to the time it could go on for, said a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) report released on Friday.

Lava boils away largest lake on Big Island in about 90 minutes
Green Lake, the largest freshwater lake on Hawaii's Big Island, has completely disappeared, another victim of the Kilauea volcano, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Lava from Fissure 8 begin pouring into the lake on June 2, turning it into a roiling cauldron. A thick, white plume of water vapor billowed hundreds of feet over the lake. It took only an hour and half for the molten rock to evaporate the entire body of water, which was about 200 feet deep.

Philippine Volcano Spews Lava, Eruption 'Imminent'
The Philippines’ most active volcano spewed fountains of lava and massive ash plumes overnight and Tuesday morning after authorities warned a violent eruption may be imminent. Lava fountains reached up to 700 meters (2,300 feet) above Mount Mayon’s crater and ash plumes rose up to 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) during the night and before daybreak, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. An explosive eruption Monday was the most powerful since the volcano started acting up more than a week ago.

Biggest underwater volcanic eruption in Pacific Ocean: Covers 600 miles, forms pumice island
It took six years for researchers to uncover the truth behind the strange substance spreading across the Pacific Ocean, spotted by an airline passenger in 2012. Scientists back then claimed the strange substance to be pumice. However, it was discovered that the Havre volcano, discovered in 2002 and located 600 miles off the coast of New Zealand, had erupted, leaving behind a floating raft of rock. The volcano sits one mile below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. With the aid of deep search robots controlled by remotes, the scientists studied the scale of this volcanic eruption and the expelled materials.
