E-cigarettes may help people kick the habit of smoking but they're also attracting new, younger people to the potentially toxic chemical nicotine. And many of those new e-cigarette users are likely to be young vapers, drawn to the fruit, candy and mint/menthol flavors of the product, according to new findings published Tuesday in Public Health Reports.

A new study has found that an overwhelming number of parents believe e-cigarettes are safe to use around children, despite growing concerns about the toxic chemicals they contain. They’ve been marketed as a safer alternative to smoking,” said Jeremy Drehmer, co-author of the study. “To their credit, they are safer when compared to cigarettes. But pretty much if you compare anything to cigarettes, the other thing is going to be safer.”

E-Cigarette Use Linked to Increased Stroke, Coronary Artery Disease
One of the largest studies of its kind has found that using electronic cigarettes can lead to a dramatic increase in the user’s odds of having a heart attack, coronary artery disease, and depression. Officials in San Francisco have proposed a new law to ban e-cigarette sales until their health effects are evaluated by the US government. The law appears to be the first of its kind in the US and seeks to curb a rising usage by young people. Critics, however, say it will make it harder for people to kick addiction. A second city law would bar making, selling or distributing tobacco on city property and is aimed at an e-cigarette firm renting on Pier 70.

More adults wrongly think vaping is worse than cigarettes
The study, which appears in JAMA Network Open, finds the proportion of American adults who perceived e-cigarettes to be more harmful than cigarettes more than tripled from 2012 to 2017. During the same period, the percentage of US adults who perceived e-cigarettes to be equally as harmful as cigarettes also increased significantly.
