What are we to make of "ruin porn", the work of photographers and artists who aim to communicate the romantic frisson of run-down buildings?

Urbex: Health Resort aka Villa Woodstock, Germany - November 2014 - PROJ3CTM4YH3M Urban Exploration
This abandoned grand neo-renaissance styled Mansion was originally a residential dwelling but from the mid 1980's became a care facility and later a retirement home for the elderly and was linked to the nearby church organisations. Villa Woodstock as this place is most commonly known, was apparently set for demolition before a private investor stepped in to repurpose the old building...

Nice Downtowns: How Did They Get That Way?
I had anticipated some of the rewards and discoveries of visiting cities in the process of economic and cultural recovery and re-invention. An unexpected reward has been the chance to get a time-capsule view, a kind of real-life time-line diorama, of how the downtown areas of cities look through all the stages of a down-and-up cycle. The down phase includes hollowing-out and pawn-shop-dominated decay. Then there is spotty and tentative improvement.

Pacer
Pacer looked at the world in a way no film had before it. The geometry of the city and its construction, the artistry of Montreal's landscape seen the hyper-prism of a camera racing through time on different dimension. Compressed imagery and physical motion combine in a never-been-seen-before kind of way.

The complex role of malls: private but sort-of-public spaces
Victor Gruen, inventor of Edina’s Southdale Mall, had dreams of saving ruined cities. As he saw it, postwar America had fallen on hard times, ruined by planners and their monolithic neighborhoods. Gruen wanted nothing more than to resurrect the vibrant street life of his native Vienna.

Can Canada teach the rest of us to be nicer?
The world, I think, would be a better place if we were all a bit more Canadian. Canadian niceness is pure, and untainted by the passive-aggressive undertones found in American niceness (have a good day, or else!). It’s also abundant. Canada is to niceness as Saudi Arabia is to oil. It’s awash in the stuff, and it’s about time, I say, the rest of the world imported some.

Rainworks: Water-Activated Street Art & Games in Rainy Seattle
Rainworks are pieces of street art that only appear when wet, featuring messages, images and interactive games that work great for a city infamous for its frequent precipitation. The idea, in part, is to encourage people to enjoy the rain, and reward those who go out and play in the gathering drizzle.

Dubai Flow Motion
My first impression of Dubai was that of super-tall buildings jutting out of the desert sand. However, after 3 months of exploration, research and filming, my lasting impression is of the eternal wonder of the desert and the importance it holds for the Emirati people. Dubai may be home to the world’s most outrageous skyline but Dubai’s desert dunes and historical creek are where you’ll find its soul.

Half the DNA on the NYC Subway Matches No Known Organism
The results of a massive new DNA sequencing project on the New York City subway have just been published. And yup, there's a lot of bacteria on the subway—though we know most of it is harmless. What's really important, though, is what we don't know about it. The PathoMap project, which involved sampling turnstiles, benches, and keypads at 466 stations, found 15,152 life-forms in total, half of which were bacterial. The Wall Street Journal has created a fun...
