Todd Heap, ex-NFL star, kills daughter, three, in truck accident
A former NFL player has accidentally killed his three-year-old daughter at his home in Arizona, police say. Todd Heap, 37, was moving his truck in his driveway in the city of Mesa on Friday afternoon when the accident occurred. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and Mr Heap showed no signs of impairment.

At least 26 dead in garbage dump collapse in Sri Lanka
The death toll from Friday’s collapse of a large portion of the massive garbage dump in Meethotamulla, in the suburbs of Colombo, rose to 26 by yesterday evening. The bodies of seven children, along with 19 adults, have been found so far. Another 12 injured have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. Residents told WSWS reporters that there could be as many as a 100 people still buried under the debris.

Kansas police announced Sunday the capture of a man who they say murdered a woman near the playground named for the victim's sister -- who was just 10 when she was abducted and killed in 1999. Emenencio Lansdown, the subject of a massive manhunt, was taken into custody after an overnight standoff, according to reports.

Greece train hits house after derailing, killing three
Three people have been killed and many more seriously injured after a passenger train derailed in northern Greece, officials say. The train, travelling from Athens, struck a house when it left the track near the city of Thessaloniki. A resident at the property said he had managed to jump from a balcony just before the train made impact.

At least eight people were killed and up to 50 injured after a boiler exploded at a garment factory in Bangladesh on Monday, authorities said. Dozens of labourers were on site at the factory in an industrial district outside the capital Dhaka when a blast tore through the six-storey building, causing its walls and a roof to collapse.

Woman fatally shot by Minneapolis police was engaged to be married
A 40-year-old woman who family members said called 911 to report a possible assault in the alley behind her home Saturday night was fatally shot by a Minneapolis police officer. The shooting happened at the south end of the alley on W. 51st Street between Washburn and Xerxes avenues S. in the city's Fulton neighborhood. The woman, Justine Damond, from Sydney, Australia, and her fiancé lived in the 5000 block of Washburn. They had planned to marry in August, a family friend said.

Girl dies in wreck livestreamed on Instagram, sister arrested
A California woman was arrested after a fatal crash killed her 14-year-old sister Friday posted a recording of the wreck and its gruesome aftermath on Instagram. Obdulia Sanchez, 18, was singing and listening to music as she drove with her sister and another 14-year-old girl in the backseat when the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway. The video then captures the sound of screams as Sanchez tried correcting the turn.

French philosopher Dufourmantelle drowns rescuing children
A leading French philosopher who advocated risk-taking has drowned after attempting to save two children at a beach on the French Riviera. Anne Dufourmantelle entered the water after the children got into difficulty in strong winds at Pampelonne beach, near St Tropez, on Friday. The two children were later rescued by lifeguards and were unharmed. The French culture minister, Françoise Nyssen, said Dufourmantelle was a "great philosopher who helped us live".

Accidental shooting kills boy in Lawrence County
A 10-year-old boy from rural Lawrence County died on Sunday night after being accidentally shot by his father on Saturday evening. Sheriff Brad DeLay identifies the victim as Garrett Spaulding, who lived with his family south of Miller. DeLay says the Spaulding family raises chickens. He said on Monday afternoon that a rooster was in some brush and the family was trying to get it back in its pen. He said the boy's father was carrying a small-caliber rifle when he tripped and fell. The gun fired and hit Garrett in the head. He died about 24 hours later.

Kensington council is asking Grenfell Tower survivors to 'bid' on permanent homes
Kensington council (RBKC) is facing fresh criticism after inviting survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire to "bid" against each other for permanent accommodation. Survivors were able to logon to a website from Monday morning to register their interest in about 100 flats made available at Kensington Row, Hortensia Road and Tavistock Crescent, more than two months on from the tragedy that claimed at least 80 lives.
