An DNA test result released yesterday confirmed that a male prisoner sold sperm to drug smuggler Nguyễn Thị Huệ awaiting execution under the death penalty in Quảng Ninh Province. Huệ, 42, of northern Lạng Sơn Province was arrested in 2012 for drug trafficking and sentenced to death in 2014. In early February 2016, she was found to be some four or five months pregnant.

Joshua Wong, the 19-year-old Hong Kong student activist who became an icon of the city’s 2014 pro-democracy protests, was detained in Thailand early Wednesday. A turtle in Thailand that had an operation to remove nearly 1,000 coins from her stomach two weeks ago has died from blood poisoning. The 25-year-old sea turtle fell into a coma after a second operation on Sunday, following intestinal problems. Named Omsin, meaning "Piggy Bank", she was found to be eating coins thrown into a public pond where she lived, in Chonburi province.

New population of rare tigers found in eastern Thailand
A new breeding population of the critically endangered Indochinese tiger has been found in a national park in eastern Thailand, conservationists say. Camera traps discovered a small population with at least six cubs in the jungle. Poaching and the loss of habitat has reduced the global population of the sub-species to under 250. Conservationists said the success was due to the stepping-up of anti-poaching efforts in Thailand.

Thailand to increase green areas by 40 percent in next 20 years
Thailand plans to create forests in urban areas to help absorb air pollution and build more green offices. Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) Permanent Secretary Wijarn Simachaya said in a seminar on topic of forests in cities and sustainability that the ministry is now pursuing its 20-year plan to increase green areas in the country by 40 percent, compared to 32 percent at present.

The travel document of Vorayuth Yoovidhya, known as Boss, was cancelled on "Friday afternoon", Busadee Santipitaks, spokeswoman for Thailand's foreign ministry, told the AFP news agency.

Thailand has delivered its harshest sentence ever for insulting the monarchy, jailing a man for 35 years. The Bangkok military court sentenced 34-year-old former insurance salesman Vichai Thepwong to 70 years’ imprisonment on 10 counts of lese-majeste, but halved the sentence because he had pleaded guilty. The conviction is the heaviest sentence yet, beating a 30-year sentence handed down in 2015.
