Cell phone carriers in USofA -- help!

There is a chance I might have to come stateside (USofA) next year. I am doing some research in regards to cell phone carriers and plans. Where I am now, it's easy, I own my phone and prepay 20NZD once a month for unlimited calls and texts and and data (I never run out so it's enough). If I need more data I can just top-up as needed. In other words, I control how much I need/want and spend.

Okay, is there something similar in the US? Because I get so confused trying to figure out T-mobile, Verizon, AT&T, et cetera. And everything seems so damn expensive -- as if 100USD is a DEAL? wtf? And I'd like to avoid a contract because that just screams to me rip-off. Thanx

Are you happy to buy a new phone? If so, you could get on some interesting, hugely affordable plans with Republic Wireless or Google's Project Fi. Otherwise, wanting to avoid a contract you might first check MetroPCS, T-Mobile or Sprint. A friend of mine recently learned her $60/mo. unlimited deal with MetroPCS included tethering at no extra cost with an 8GB/mo. limit. Don't know what prepaid is like with data in the U.S. but let us know what you sort out!

I just realized, English is not your first language, is it? Are you French? Or, Canadian maybe?

Oh! I only just now realized this comment was meant for me. I must've made a muddle of that comment up above for you to come to that conclusion! I'm from Park City, Utah, originally. You know, the Mormons only stopped at the Great Salt Lake because they thought with all that salt water that they'd reached the Pacific Ocean. They were a ways off. I've made a point of making it the rest of the way. How about you? From whence do you roam?

I live in the mountains of Northern California, originally from Phoenix.

"Are you happy to buy a new phone?"

It was that sentence that made me think you weren't a native English speaker. Just read that sentence in context with the rest of the comment and I think you will see what I mean. My bad, sorry.

No harm done. I’d’ve tried Republic Wireless or Project Fi if I hadn’t had to buy their phone. Sounds like their charges are in line, but at month’s end they credit you for the minutes, texts and data you didn’t use. So if you’re often in wifi range and barely use cell service it can be inexpensive.

Pay as you go is definitely available, it just costs an arm and a leg. And I think you need to provide ID, although that may have changed.
