William Shatner on ‘Star Trek,’ Space Travel and Mortality: ‘I Don’t Have Long to Live’
William Shatner kicks things off with a compliment. We’re talking via Zoom — he’s beaming in from the sprawling kitchen of his Los Angeles home, which overlooks the San Fernando Valley. I’m dialing in from the living room of my walkup apartment in Brooklyn, a much more modest setting. But Shatner is impressed by the over-stocked bookcase behind me, as well as the paintings, a seascape and an impressionist pastoral scene that I inherited from my grandmother, that line the wall around it.

Star Trek: Lower Decks and Discovery have ruined the original series for me
Star Trek is a beloved show for many, and with good reason. As a franchise that’s graced our screens for over 50 years now, the impact of Gene Roddenberry’s creation on popular culture and sci-fi can’t be overstated.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Giving Spock a Canonical Full Name
You’ve known Spock as, well, Spock, ever since the the original Star Trek. We’ve seen him aboard the Enterprise, we’ve seen him as the would-be unifier of the Vulcan and Romulan peoples, an ambassador, and thanks to Discovery, in his Panic! At the Disco rebellious phase. Now Strange New Worlds is giving a little new light to Spock—with the help of a classic novel.

Star Trek needs less logic and more crying
Thankfully, Star Trek: Discovery is doing just that. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) poses that question to the United Federation of Planets council at the climax of “… But to Connect,” the seventh episode of Star Trek: Discovery’s fourth season. The council has convened to address the presence of a new species whose arrival in the galaxy has planet-destroying consequences, perhaps intentionally. Some council members consider an aggressive response, but Burnham urges diplomacy, recognizing a unique first contact opportunity.

Star Trek: First Contact may very well be the best of the Trek films
Calling Star Trek: First Contact an underrated Star Trek film is like calling the Mona Lisa a nice doodle. First Contact may be the greatest Star Trek film, full stop. Granted, that’s a subjective opinion and one that some may not share, but what many will share is the fact that it’s one of the best to ever grace the screen.

Netflix to Feature Star Trek’s Discovery And Picard
We have just discovered that CBS is working in the United States to carry its new Star Trek shows to Netflix. The business currently has four new Trek series that air on its CBS All-Access streaming network: Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks and Short Treks. All four have struggled to attract an audience, and while some can blame the content of the shows, my CBS sources tell me they agree that the big issue is getting the word out about CBS All-Access.

Deep Space Nine: The Trek spinoff that saved the day by staying put
As millions binge-watch Netflix and coop up indoors, virus-inspired films such as Outbreak and Contagion, as well as television shows like The CW’s Containment, have found new audiences for those looking to tackle pandemic-related anxiety. After all, research seems to show that seeking out forms of entertainment that scare us—a method of confronting fears in a safe environment—can be a coping mechanism against perceived threats.

Jonathan Frakes Had Anxiety Attacks Over His Return to Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Picard isn’t just catching us up with what Jean-Luc has been up to in the years since we last saw him onscreen, but a cavalcade of Trek characters—among them the namesake of Picard’s new pupper and former second-in-command of the Enterprise, Will Riker. But returning to his iconic role caused a lot of stress for Jonathan Frakes.
