Return of the extremely elongated cloud on Mars
A mysteriously long, thin cloud has again appeared over the 20-km-high Arsia Mons volcano on Mars. A recurrent feature, the cloud is made up of water ice, but despite appearances it is not a plume linked to volcanic activity. Instead, the curious stream forms as airflow is influenced by the volcano's 'leeward' slope − the side that does not face the wind.

Curiosity Mars rover snaps its highest-resolution panorama yet
NASA's Curiosity rover has captured its highest-resolution panorama yet of the Martian surface. Composed of more than 1,000 images taken during the 2019 Thanksgiving holiday and carefully assembled over the ensuing months, the composite contains 1.8 billion pixels of Martian landscape. The rover's Mast Camera, or Mastcam, used its telephoto lens to produce the panorama; meanwhile, it relied on its medium-angle lens to produce a lower-resolution, nearly 650-million-pixel panorama that includes the rover's deck and robotic arm.

NASA’s Mars 2020 rover rests on its own six wheels for the first time
Nasa's Mars 2020 rover will have to operate on its own in a harsh environment, hundreds of millions of miles from the nearest mechanic. But for now, it’s still in development at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab — and every milestone is an important one. Including supporting its own weight, fully assembled and resting on its own six wheels, which is what the rover managed this week.

NASA Mars Curiosity rover selfie celebrates rare scientific feat
Curiosity is Mars' top supermodel. A new selfie proves the fetching NASA rover knows how to pose for the camera on the end of its robotic arm. Work it, Curiosity, work it. You can check out the full high-res image on NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab website. Look to the left of the rover and you'll spot twin drill holes created by Curiosity in this fascinating "clay-bearing unit" area of Mars.

New images show Mars as you've never seen it before
One of the latest images of Mars looks more like cookies and cream than it does the so-called Red Planet. A photo taken this week by the European Space Agency and Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter's camera actually shows north polar dunes on Mars.

This is what the ground looked like after inSight landed on Mars
When InSight landed on Mars on Nov. 26th, 2018, it deployed a parachute to slow its descent through the thin Martian atmosphere. As it approached the surface, it fired its retro rocket to slow it even more, and then gently touched down on the surface. As it did so, its retro rockets excavated two small pits in the Martian soil.

Nasa's Curiosity rover captured the moment Mars experienced an eclipse
The rover, which has been on the surface of the red planet since 2012, pictured Mars’ moon Phobos passing in front of the sun. Nasa fitted the vehicle with special solar lenses that allow it to stare up at the sun from the rocky Martian landscape. Phobos measures about 7 miles across and the eclipse was captured on March 26. Earlier in the month the rover had also captured Deimos, another Martian moon, passing in front of the sun.

NASA releases the final panorama that Opportunity took on Mars
Before a Martian dust storm took out Opportunity in June 2018, the rover was able to capture hundreds of images that NASA has now released as a panorama. The 360-degree photo is composed of 354 images overall, taken by the rover's Panoramic Camera (Pancam) from May 13th through June 10th. It shows the vehicle's final resting place in Perseverance Valley located in Endurance Crater's western rim. The rover lost touch with NASA in June after it reported the approaching storm that ultimately covered its solar panels with dust and rocks.

NASA’s photo archives reveal 60 years of space travel
When it comes to illustrating humanity’s achievements in space, NASA’s back catalogue is as good as it gets. The images here are all part of a book tracing the agency’s 60 years of existence using more than 400 photographs. The big launches, moon landings, starscapes and Martian panoramas all make the cut, alongside plenty of striking views from behind the scenes, images that give a human scale to NASA’s vast technological endeavours.

Mars Express gets festive: A winter wonderland on Mars
This image from ESA’s Mars Express shows Korolev crater, an 82-kilometre-across feature found in the northern lowlands of Mars. This oblique perspective view was generated using a digital terrain model and Mars Express data gathered over orbits 18042 (captured on 4 April 2018), 5726, 5692, 5654, and 1412. The crater itself is centred at 165° E, 73° N on the martian surface. The image has aresolution of roughly 21 metres per pixel.
