Personally, I feel something in common is what binds a community, and is like the glue. If people don't know what to talk about, or don't have a reason to. It will quickly fall apart, as no one there is really interested for a long period of time/being forced into the community due to circumstances. I have seen multiple communities without a sense of focus, or purpose, and they don't last.
