Atheists are the Most Politically Active Group in the United States
It’s become almost a trope at this point among people who study and write about American religion and politics – evangelicals punch way above their weight. Their voter turnout has stayed relatively steady despite their drop in population share. But, I was working through some data today and noticed something that I don’t think that I’ve seen reported on much – atheists are incredibly politically active – more so than any other religious group.

Skelton: How Ron Reagan, son of a true believer, became an atheist unafraid of 'burning in hell'
I’ll miss the Democratic presidential debates — especially watching Ron Reagan tell us he’s a “lifelong atheist, not afraid of burning in hell.” It may be my all-time favorite TV ad, delivered with a slight grin and perfect timing — very Reagan-like — by the son of the 40th U.S. president. He’s touting the Freedom from Religion Foundation, a 32,000-member organization of nonbelievers that fights for the separation of church and state.

Richard Dawkins' 'God Delusion' is a hit in Saudi Arabia? What?
Three million digital copies of Dawkins’ best-selling “bible of atheism,” The God Delusion, have been downloaded in the kingdom, “one of twelve Muslim-majority states where the statute books prescribe the death penalty for apostacy,” according to an article in the new February/March edition of Free Inquiry, a periodical of the secular Center for Inquiry organization.

Don't laugh: Belief in Santa Claus not inferior to belief in God
It’s the nature of human beings and their beliefs. And this assumed superiority is continuously reinforced by shaming proponents of any heterodoxy that emerges in groups of shared belief, like for example in conservative evangelical Protestant factions.

What I want for Christmas - Freedom From Religion Foundation
If I had the power to produce exactly what I want for next Christmas, I would have all the kings and emperors resign and allow the people to govern themselves. I would have all the nobility crop their titles and give their lands back to the people. I would have the Pope throw away his tiara, take off his sacred vestments, and admit that he is not acting for God -- is not infallible -- but is just an ordinary Italian.

Millennials' retreat from religion bodes ill for U.S. politics
The article reported that an American Enterprise Institute survey of more than 2,500 Americans showed “little evidence of a … surge in religious interest” among millennials, even though many now are married with children and have mortgages. AEI’s survey reported that data suggested several key reasons...

Millennials Are Leaving Religion And Not Coming Back
Millennials have earned a reputation for reshaping industries and institutions — shaking up the workplace, transforming dating culture, and rethinking parenthood. They’ve also had a dramatic impact on American religious life. Four in ten millennials now say they are religiously unaffiliated, according to the Pew Research Center. In fact, millennials (those between the ages of 23 and 38) are now almost as likely to say they have no religion as they are to identify as Christian. 1

I'm Not 'Blessed,' I'm An Atheist And I Don't Need God To Give Thanks Or Show Gratitude
The worn hinges squeak as I pull the heavy wooden door open. Inside is a cavernous room, its walls made of stone. Looking back at me is a fireplace with a wrought-iron log holder that reminds me of an overgrown spider. The stone surrounding it is scarred with black ash.

Religion’s Smart-People Problem
Should you believe in a God? Not according to most academic philosophers. A comprehensive survey revealed that only about 14% of English-speaking professional philosophers are theists. As for what little religious belief remains among their colleagues, most professional philosophers regard it as a strange aberration among otherwise intelligent people. Among scientists the situation is much the same.

The Mythological Creature that Christians Still Believe In
As atheists, we tend to make fun of Christians who believe in things like talking donkeys, talking snakes and fish that swallow people whole and then deliver them, unharmed, several days later. We laugh at stories of a sea magically parting in half on command, or an angel flying around killing the firstborn sons of everyone who didn’t put blood on their door.
