Girl, 11, gives birth to rapist's child after Argentina refuses abortion
An 11-year old girl who became pregnant after being raped was forced to give birth after Argentine authorities refused to allow her the abortion to which she was entitled. The authorities ignored repeated requests for an abortion from the child, called “Lucía” to protect her identity, as well as her mother and a number of Argentine women’s right activists. After 23 weeks of pregnancy, she had to undergo a caesarean section on Tuesday. The baby is unlikely to survive.

French actor Gérard Depardieu has been accused of rape and sexual assault by a 22-year-old woman, a spokesman for the Paris prosecutor told CNN on Thursday. New Swedish law recognises sex without consent as rape
A tough new law that will recognise sex without explicit consent as rape comes into effect in Sweden on Sunday, after the country was rocked by the #MeToo movement denouncing sexual harassment and assault. The law stipulates that a person has committed rape if they have been part of a sexual act in which the other person has not participated "freely". Rape had previously been defined as a sexual act carried out with the use of violence or threat.

There’s a moment in BBC2’s documentary Japan’s Secret Shame where Japanese journalist Shiori Ito returns for the first time in three years to a Tokyo hotel, where she alleges she was raped by a prominent TV broadcaster and reporter. “I can already feel that my body is reacting,” she says in the programme. It’s night-time, similar conditions to the evening of the alleged attack. “It’s the light I remember, this light,” Ito adds, looking up at rows of hotel windows. There’s a pause. “I have to go.”

Sudan overturns death sentence for teen who killed rapist husband
A Sudanese court has commuted the death sentence for teenager Noura Hussein, who killed her husband after he raped her, in a case that has put a spotlight on forced child marriage and marital rape in the African nation. Her legal team told CNN on Tuesday that Hussein, now 19, has been given a five-year jail term for killing the 35-year-old man. The court ordered her family to pay 337,000 Sudanese pounds ($18,700) in "blood money" to the man's family.

US rape case judge removed from office
A US judge who was widely criticised for his leniency towards a campus rapist has been removed from office by voters. Judge Aaron Persky handed Stanford University swimmer Brock Turner a six-month sentence in June 2016. But county judges in California are elected, and if a petition to remove them from office garners enough signatures a vote will be held. Such elections are rare - the last time a US judge was recalled was in 1977.

Sweden adopts law saying sex without consent is rape
Sweden has adopted a law requiring people to get explicit consent before sexual contact, otherwise it will be considered as rape. Swedish politicians approved the change by 257 votes to 38, with 54 absentees. The law, which goes into effect on July 1, says "it is no longer necessary for the offender to use violence or threats, or to exploit the victim's particularly vulnerable situation" for rape charges to be brought forward.

Georgia jury awards $1 billion after guard rapes teen
A Georgia jury has awarded an eye-popping $1 billion verdict against a security company after an apartment complex guard was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl. Hope Cheston was outside by some picnic tables with her boyfriend during a party in October 2012 when an armed security guard approached, attorney L. Chris Stewart told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The guard told the boyfriend not to move and raped Cheston, Stewart said.
