Japan’s Maglev Train Hits World Record 590 Kilometers Per Hour
Central Japan Railway Co. said its magnetic levitation bullet train hit 590 kilometers per hour (366 miles per hour) on Thursday and broke the previous speed record set 12 years ago by the company. Work on the first leg of the system gets underway in Fresno, Tuesday, reports CBS San Francisco. Once completed, it will be the nation's first high-speed rail system. Russia plans to build a new high speed railway, with trains that would speed from Moscow to Beijing in just 48 hours. At the moment, it takes about seven days to commute between the two cities and the route requires changes. According to Romanian website Glasul, the Kremlin has awarded the project to China Railway High-speed (CRH), a subsidiary of the state-controlled China Railway (CR), which is working in a joint-venture with the local firm Uralvagonzavod.

Louisiana Teen Killed By Train After Putting Coins On Tracks
A Louisiana teenager playing a game with friends on train tracks was killed this weekend when some equipment threw him under one of the cars. Law enforcement officials tell The Advocate that 17-year-old Brandt Torres and three friends had been placing coins on train tracks to watch them be crushed early Sunday. Torres lay on the ground inches from the passing cars. A ladder hanging off one of the cars caught him, tossing him under the train.
