'Bucket-list shot': Australian gets rare photo of space station in front of moon
An amateur Australian astronomer who took a “perfect” photo of the International Space Station passing in front of the moon says it took him eight years to set up. Ken Lawson, from Geraldton in Western Australia, has been an avid astronomer and photographer since childhood. On 14 March he captured the shot of the space station passing between Earth and the moon, in perfect light, with a simple camera and telescope.

See the Sketches J.R.R. Tolkien Used to Build Middle-Earth
HOW DID J.R.R. Tolkien create The Lord of the Rings? The simple answer is that he wrote it. He sat down in a chair in 1937 and spent more than a dozen years working on what remains a masterwork of fantasy literature and a genius stroke of immersive worldbuilding. The more complicated answer is that in addition to writing the story, he drew it. The many maps and sketches he made while drafting The Lord of the Rings informed his storytelling, allowing him to test narrative ideas and illustrate scenes he needed to capture in words. For Tolkien, the art of writing and the art of drawing were inextricably intertwined.

Slurpee waves: Incredible photos capture nearly frozen waves off the coast of Nantucket
These mesmerising photos of nearly frozen waves look like they’ve been pulled straight out of the new Frozen 2 trailer. However, they were taken by photographer Jonathan Nimerfroh in Nantucket, Massachusetts. So, unless Elsa has recently moved to New England, this sub-zero phenomenon is entirely the work of Mother Nature. Nimerfroh first encountered the slushy waves back in February 2015, during his daily surf check.

Schmitt with Flag and Earth Above
Geologist-Astronaut Harrison Schmitt, Apollo 17 Lunar Module pilot, is photographed next to the American Flag during extravehicular activity (EVA) of NASA's final lunar landing mission in the Apollo series. The photo was taken at the Taurus-Littrow landing site. The highest part of the flag appears to point toward our planet earth in the distant background.
