How I connected with my autistic son through video games
My son was seven when a pediatrician diagnosed him on the autism scale – but really, we had known for years. There was his limited vocabulary – a handful of words by the time he was three, and a habit of mixing up letters or relying on stock sentences. He found it hard to get on with other children at his nursery, and later, when he went to a much bigger school, it was obvious the experience was terrifyingly loud, hectic and incomprehensible to him. Meanwhile, if there was something he was interested in, whether it was Peppa Pig or Superman, he would...

Even conservative experts know Christian ‘discipline’ is abuse
Ask any conservative Christian and they’ll tell you: Of course we don’t abuse children. We’re opposed to abuse. We use loving biblical correction, which is quite different. Those interested in ending violence against children have therefore been very interested in the results of a recent study which, after analysing 50 years’ worth of data, concluded that ‘mild spanking’ and physical abuse have basically the same effects...

Children with weak future planning are more likely to be involved in crime
If you were asked whether you’d prefer to be given $140 today or $1400 in five years' time, the smart answer is obvious. But immediate cash can be really tempting: perhaps you have expensive car repairs looming or you want to buy a gift for someone—that $140 would do the trick. It can be easy to justify cheating your future self out of $1260 in the face of instant gratification. The tendency to ignore or discount the value of a future benefit is called "time discounting." Plenty of research suggests...

So far this year, American toddlers have shot at least 23 people — and 11 have died
This past week, a Milwaukee toddler fatally shot his mother after finding a handgun in the back seat of the car they were riding in. Since April 20, there have been at least seven instances in which a one- , two- or three-year-old shot themselves or somebody else in the United States...
