Rumors are currently circulating again about a possible Nintendo Switch 4K or Pro model. The current firmware of the Switch got the ball rolling, in which indications of a possible new model were discovered.

The cynical answer, according to analysts and one developer, is likely the correct one: it's to juice game sales.

The Switch has been a runaway achievement for Nintendo, mainly after 2020 that had us all shut-in at home playing Animal Crossing. The question now is… what comes next? Signs point to a new, 7-inch OLED version with viable 4K gaming when docked, coming later this year. It might also have a brand-new Nvidia processor that’s capable of 4K Nintendo gaming for the first time.

Nintendo’s golden goose is already falling behind

Four years ago today on 3rd March 2017, the Nintendo Switch was first released across most regions worldwide. With its monstrous sales records and incredible library of games, it's not especially easy to remember how different things were for Nintendo before the Switch's arrival. We all know the story of Switch's predecessor, the Wii U – and how, despite a strong lineup of first-party greats, it ultimately disappointed in terms of sales and third-party effort – but Nintendo's new console appears to have completely turned things around for the better.

Twilight Princess HD and The Wind Waker HD may be coming to the Nintendo Switch after all. While some may be disappointed that only Skyward Sword HD is coming to the Switch, there is hope for the other two titles, perhaps with a few more thrown into the mix. The rumor comes courtesy of Andy Robinson from VGC and Tom Phillips from Eurogamer. Robinson was more blunt with his comments, with Phillips much more coy but still pointed to the release of the classic Zelda games as well.

A staggering 99% of video game sales in Japan in 2021 have been for the Switch, as Sony announces 4.5 million PS5s have been sold worldwide. There are some real mixed messages going on at the moment in terms of the PlayStation 5 in Japan. On the one hand, analysts have painted a picture of doom and gloom, claiming Sony is abandoning its home turf, while on the other riots have been breaking out amongst fans trying to get hold of the console.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), the EU's joint consumer programme, has called for a Europe-wide investigation into Nintendo Switch Joy-Con drift after receiving more than 25,000 complaints from numerous countries. The group has now submitted its own complaints to the European Commission and national consumer protection authorities around Europe, based on its rules surrounding "premature obsolescence and misleading omissions of key consumer information on the basis of the EU's Unfair Commercial Practices Directive".

Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a fantastic compilation for the Nintendo Switch. One of the standout titles available in Super Mario 3D All-Stars is Mario Galaxy, in all its splendid HD glory. One thing Mario Galaxy has is motion controls, if you choose to use them. The most interesting part is the “point-and-click” portion of it, which is simple, yet at the same time, Mario Galaxy HD shows that Skyward Sword HD would work on the Switch.

Faces of Evil and Wand of Gamelon were the first two of three Zelda games Nintendo published on the ill-fated Philips CD-i system in the early 90s. They are very bad—so bad Nintendo doesn’t recognise them as series canon—but they’ve still got a certain charm to them, and so this fan effort to rebuild them from the ground up on PC is pretty neat.

The power of Animal Crossing.

Bloomberg recently published a story about Microsoft setting its sights on Japan as the next console battleground. Fortunately, according to one game industry consultant, it's not expected to have any impact on Nintendo - at least in the near future.

The Switch is selling very well and this is now confirmed with the latest financial report that they kicked out of Nintendo, which states that as many as 68.30 million Switch consoles have been sold worldwide.

D3 Publisher has announced that the Japanese trap adventure game Misshitsu no Sacrifice which originally released exclusively for the PSP in Japan in February 2010 is getting a remake for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. The remake is called Abyss of the Sacrifice and will release worldwide on December 17, 2020. The game will support English, Japanese, Traditional, and Simplified Chinese languages.

The Nintendo Switch has sold over 15 million units in Japan as of the month of September. This data has been gathered over the approximate time of three years and six months, according to Famitsu. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

A Bloomberg report about Nintendo's plans to boost Switch production includes a brief mention of Nintendo's apparent request. Third-party developers have reportedly been asked "to make their games 4K-ready," which implies the company is at least considering a model of the console that can output at a higher resolution than Switch is currently capable of.
