'Super Mario Run' Getting Brand New World, New Playable Character, and 50% Off Sale on September 29th
Apple is using the revamped App Store in iOS 11 with its added emphasis on curation and editorial to bring us news of a substantial update for Super Mario Run [Free] that's set to hit next week. First up is a new mode called Remix 10 which takes 10 bite-sized chunks from the existing levels in the game and has you play through them in quick succession.

Nintendo Says Super Mario Run Has Yet to Reach 'Acceptable Profit Point' Nearly One Year After Launch
Nintendo yesterday held its quarterly earnings report [PDF], launching off with details of its "Smart-Device Business" and telling investors how things have been going for Super Mario Run and Fire Emblem Heroes, while detailing the upcoming launch of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. Although Fire Emblem Heroes is on track to meet the company's "overall profit objectives," Super Mario Run appears to be a disappointment in the iOS App Store for Nintendo, which stated it has "not yet reached an acceptable profit point" for the game (via The Verge).

Nintendo is bringing Mario Kart to smartphones
Nintendo has announced the latest of its IPs to make the leap to smartphones, and it’s a big one: Mario Kart. An app called Mario Kart Tour is set to be released in the next financial year, meaning anywhere between April 2018 and March 2019. No details about Mario Kart Tour have been made available other than its existence, but the Mario Kart franchise is one of Nintendo’s biggest.

The state of iOS game development, according to the creators of Alto’s Odyssey
2015's Alto's Adventure was a surprise hit. It launched on iOS as a premium game with no microtransactions, and it landed at the top of App Store charts all over the world. It was developed by Team Alto, a collaboration between a Canadian company called Snowman and artist Harry Nesbitt, which had not previously published a game. Its sequel, Alto's Odyssey, launched this week to positive reception once again—the game has a 91 on Metacritic.

SimCity Creator Will Wright Announces New Game Proxi
Proxi, a new mobile game from legendary game designer Will Wright, was revealed today during Unity's keynote at Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2018. Wright and developer Gallium Artists are creating the new title with Unity. Like the previous games Wright has created—which include SimCity, The Sims, and Spore—Proxi is a simulation game. In this new mobile game, however, players will construct worlds from their memories.

Fortnite now available for everyone on iOS
Invitations to the mobile version of Fortnite, which includes the Battle Royale game mode, began trickling out just a few weeks ago. Now the free-to-play title is available to anyone with a compatible iOS device. Developer Epic Games made the announcement this morning on the game’s official Twitter feed. The game requires an internet connection and iOS 11. It is only compatible with the iPhone SE, 6S, 7, 8 and X, and with the iPad Mini 4, Air 2, 2017 and Pro models. An Android version is in the works.

“Patent troll” doubles down, now accuses Clicker Heroes maker of libel
The video game studio behind Clicker Heroes says that after it recently refused "patent troll" demands and went public with them, it is now being threatened with fresh accusations of libel and new claims of patent infringement. Last month Ars reported that GTX Corporation had threatened game developer Playsaurus with a lawsuit if that studio didn't pay $35,000 for a patent licensing fee to cover a patent for "electronic tokens."

Warner Bros. got in bed with a tech company that jacked codes in order to fast-track and produce its "Westworld" mobile app ... so claims another company in a new lawsuit. The gaming company, Bethesda Softworks, is suing the media giant and Behaviour Interactive and, in the suit, says Behaviour stole its designs, artwork and codes ... and used them in the "Westworld" game.

Nintendo Will Let You Recover Cloud Saves Up to 6 Months After Your Switch Online Subscription Lapses
Clarifying its earlier policy regarding Nintendo Switch Online subscription cloud saves, Nintendo has confirmed that, even if your Online subscription lapses, you still have a bit of time to recover cloud saves. In a statement given to IGN by a Nintendo spokesperson, Nintendo has confirmed that, should a Switch owner resubscribe to Switch Online within 180 days, or six months, after their subscription ends, users can still recover their previous cloud saves.
