FACT CHECK: Do 643,000 Bankruptcies Occur in the U.S. Every Year Due to Medical Bills?
A popular meme held that 643,000 personal bankruptcies occurred in the U.S. due to medical bills, but the underlying math was elusive. In April 2016, a meme was published by the Facebook page “The Other 98%” (among others) holding that 643,000 Americans declare bankruptcy over medical bills every year, while in a number of other first-world countries, bankruptcies over medical bills are non-existent (due to the implementation of national social health insurance/medical care systems in those other countries)...

It's called the No Lackin Challenge. On YouTube, videos of the No Lackin Challenge show people pulling guns on their friends and their friends pulling out a gun too. However, no one pulls the trigger.

Overcoming Internet Disillusionment: On the Principles of Meme Design
“Artificial intelligence is not the answer to organized stupidity”—Johan Sjerpstra. “Please don’t email me unless you’re going to pay me”—Molly Soda. “Late capitalism is like your love life: it looks a lot less bleak through an Instagram filter”—Laurie Penny. “Wonder how many people going on about the necessity of free speech and rational debate have blocked and muted trolls?”—Nick Srnicek. “Post-truth is to digital capitalism what pollution is to fossil capitalism—a by-product of operations”— Evgeny Morozov. “I have seen the troll army and it is us”—Erin Gün Sirer.

Living the Meme: What happened to Success Kid?
Excuse me, this is my son, do you know him?” Ten-year-old Sammy Griner is doing an impression of his mum, imitating what she is like – complete with hand gestures – when she tells a stranger that he is Success Kid. This isn’t an arrogant title, or a strange nickname, but the name of the meme that Sammy became when he was just a baby. When his mother, Laney, shot a picture of him holding a fistful of sand on the beach when he was 11-months-old, she had no idea that the determined expression on her baby’s face would lead him to become internationally famous online.

A dead cat that became a worldwide meme has been honoured with his own statue in Istanbul
‘Tombili’, a rotund cat beloved by Istanbul’s Ziverbey neighbourhood, has been commemorated by the city authorities after local demand for a tribute to his memory. Tombili - a Turkish word often used for chubby pets - was known by residents of Ziverbey, part of the district of Kadıköy, for his nonchalant demeanour towards people who wanted to play with him. The cat became world famous earlier this year after a photo of him reclining in one of his favourite spots on the pavement was shared thousands of times on social media.
