I don't really have any tips, but I will say that your observation seems to be dead on. I don't know if that's because of the relatively slow influx of people up until now, but the community here seems nicer. That being said, the communities I belonged to on Reddit were fairly small subreddits or ones that were specialized, so maybe that's what we are also moving to, here.

This is refreshing, isn't it? It's almost like a game with a predominantly social aspect.
