I think if the image URL is posted directly, it automatically displays inline. That's why there's a separate place to add a link to the original source page to give credit to the creator.
I think on Reddit the image URL also had to be posted directly in order for the image expander to appear, so maybe people just aren't used to doing it this way yet.

I'm sorry, this UI is kind of new to me. I was looking in settings, did I just miss it?
Top right. Under your profile picture are two buttons, Mag and List. Mag is the grid view button, and list is probably what you are seeing already.
