Until last night our team was covering all costs associated with development, upkeep and hosting of this platform, however since there is so many of you awesome people popping in to say hi our servers can no longer handle the traffic. We decided because the new setup is going to cost significantly more that we ask for some donations in order to reach the monthly cost of hosting. One day it would be awesome if we can focus full time on this site, but we realize we are still a little far from that.
Considering the workload you all got hit with, you are doing a wonderful job. Keep us informed on your fundraising efforts. You should ask around and see what people think about ads going up. You may have enough people now to interest some companies.
I have a million dollar idea for you. Make a hat store like Valve has and let users trade and create their own hats for their avatar on the profile preview.
You could have super rare hats that you can award certain posters for the content they bring or what they do for the community.
It's crazy but so far it seems that it seems to be out of pocket for the handful of individuals running it.
They did make a blog post requesting donations for server hardware and they made their monthly goal in less than 24 hours.
Combine the generosity of the user base with the ginger souls and you have an almost unlimited form of revenue!
I'm glad you linked this. I can only go back so far and I haven't been around to see most of the posts yet.
I think currently they are just collecting donations for server type things.
