Was /u/<username> a Snapzu thing? Or did people just use that because that's how Reddit did it? Maybe Snappers could refer to other users with a simple /<username> (for me, /Boop).
Well it also allows it to be easier to specify that you are referring to a user. A '/' may need to be used elsewhere, most notable in URL's but may be included in various other comments. It makes the parsing considerably easier to refer to uses with a '/u/' prefix.

It's a Snapzu thing too. If you type /u/Boop (for example) in a comment it automatically makes it into a link to http://snapzu.com/boop, but http://snapzu.com/u/boop goes to a 404.
