If I need to kill a lot of time: Elder Sign or Pokemon Ash Gray on My Boy
Honestly, a Gameboy emulator is great to have. My Boy works well enough that I paid for the full version. The free version is pretty good though. Fast forward at 2x is nice when grinding pokemon levels. I'm sure it's useful for any turn-based GBA games too.
I'll second the GBA emulator, there's a huge wealth of good games out there for it. I'll also add a PSX emulator if you can find one, especially if you can pair it with a PS3 controller with a GameKlip (and don't mind carrying all that stuff around). I beat Final Fantasy's 6-9 over about a year of subway commutes.
My Boy plus a bluetooth game pad is just awesome! If I go to the gym I stick my phone on the front of the treadmill and play pokemon while I power walk :)
