Mozilla gives up on Firefox OS, lays off 50
Mozilla has laid off a team of about 50 people working on bringing Firefox OS to "connected devices" and is ending its attempts to build a commercial platform for such devices reports CNet. Firefox OS originally started life as Mozilla's attempt at a smartphone platform. The ambition was to create a free and open source platform that used Web technology to build applications, suitable for low cost phones in emerging markets. Although a few products did materialize, Firefox OS was rapidly squeezed out by Android, so just over a year ago Mozilla repositioned the operating system.

How Firefox got fast again and where it’s going to get faster
Over the past seven months, we’ve been rapidly replacing major parts of the engine, introducing Rust and parts of Servo to Firefox. Plus, we’ve had a browser performance strike force scouring the codebase for performance issues, both obvious and non-obvious. We call this Project Quantum, and the first general release of the reborn Firefox Quantum comes out tomorrow.

Firefox will soon flag sites that have been hacked
Firefox has having a good run right now, having just released its much speedier and better-looking Quantum browser. It's now working on a new feature that security fans are bound to like: It will warn you if you're visiting a site that has suffered a data breach. Firefox is working on the feature in collaboration with "Have I Been Pwned," the popular site that can check your email and tell you if your credentials have been stolen by hackers.

Firefox's Facebook Containers cuts the social network's attempts to pry into your life online
Mozilla has released a Firefox tool called Facebook Container to stop the social network from seeing what you do online beyond Facebook's own site. Facebook, like Google and other companies, can track you when you visit many websites, such as those that have a Facebook like button. It means Facebook gets more than just personal data it can use to target ads based on your profile.

It’s time to give Firefox a fresh chance
Ever since it was first released almost a decade ago, Google’s Chrome browser has been the most consistent piece of technology in my life. I’ve gone through a legion of phones, laptops, and headphones, I’ve jumped around between Android, iOS, Windows Phone, macOS, and Windows, but I’ve rarely had reason to doubt my browser choice. Things have changed in recent times, however, and those changes have been sufficient to make me reconsider. After so many years away, I’m returning to Firefox, in equal measure pushed by Chrome’s downsides as I am pulled by Firefox’s latest upgrades.

Firefox is adding ads, because only insults are free
Mozilla’s motto is “internet for people, not profit,” however the realities of having to fund all of its ventures are forcing the company into adopting one of the web’s less human-friendly aspects: sponsored content. Having acquired read-it-later service Pocket last year, Mozilla has been populating new tabs in Firefox with Pocket reading suggestions — and those are now going to include links that an advertiser has paid for.
