Pound jumps as UK manufacturing activity rebounds
The value of the pound has jumped after a survey indicated the UK's manufacturing sector rebounded sharply in August. The Markit/CIPS purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the sector rose to 53.3 in August from July's figure of 48.3. A figure above 50 indicates expansion. The weakening of the pound following the Brexit vote boosted exports, the survey found. However, it also indicated that the weak pound had pushed up firms' costs.

Bitcoin not money, judge rules in victory for backers
Bitcoin, a Florida judge says, is not real money. Ironically, that could provide a boost to use of the crypto-currency which has remained in the shadows of the financial system. The July 22 ruling by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Teresa Pooler means that no specific license is needed to buy and sell bitcoins. The judge dismissed a case against Michel Espinoza, who had faced money laundering and other criminal charges for attempting to sell $1,500 worth of bitcoins to an undercover agent who told the defendant he was going to use the virtual money to buy stolen credit card numbers.

Pound slides to fresh 31-year low against the dollar
The pound has hit a fresh 31-year low against the dollar as markets remain edgy in the wake of the Brexit vote. At one point it hit $1.3058 against the dollar, the lowest level since September 1985. Against the euro it fell to €1.1703, its lowest since 2013. Analysts blamed a disappointing report on the UK services sector, and ongoing uncertainty about the effects of the UK's vote to leave the European Union. There was caution on Wall Street as well, where shares closed lower.

British pound could hit history-making dollar parity by end of 2016
Investors should prepare for the British pound to hit parity with the U.S. dollar by the end of the year or early in 2017, said at least one analyst — and should parity happen, it’ll be a first. After last week’s surprise U.K. vote to exit the European Union trading bloc, sterling fell more than 12% against the dollar on Friday before trimming some of its unprecedented drop late in the U.S. trading day. But bears regained the upper hand on Monday, sending the currency to a fresh 30-year low at $1.3121.

Star Trek Themed Money Is Now Legal Tender in Canada
There may not be money in the United Federation of Planets, but there's now legal Star Trek currency in Canada, courtesy of the Royal Canadian Mint. Although some of these financial arrangements sound like they were made by a Ferengi. Via The Trek Collective, the Canadian Mint has announced its plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek by releasing a line of coins that can actually be used in financial transactions...if you were so inclined. Some of them are even reasonably priced.

Ethereum is the Forefront of Digital Currency
We have sat here for the last 3 years seeing only infrastructure apps like wallets and exchanges emerge on top of Bitcoin. Why is that? My theory has been that the scripting language in Bitcoin — the piece of every Bitcoin transaction that lets you run a little software program along with it — is too restrictive. Enter Ethereum. Ethereum has taken what was a four function calculator of a programming language in Bitcoin and turned it into a full fledged computer.

Fantastic Fakes: Busting a $70 Million Counterfeiting Ring
When banks and businesses around the nation’s capital find counterfeit currency, they send it to the Washington field office of the U.S. Secret Service. One morning in May 2012, agent Adam Gaab entered its inventory room, a space filled with money counters, microscopes, ultraviolet lights, and other tools, and saw that a fresh batch of bills had just arrived.
