For World’s Newest Scrabble Stars, SHORT Tops SHORTER
Nigeria is beating the West at its own word game, using a strategy that sounds like Scrabble sacrilege. By relentlessly studying short words, this country of 500 languages has risen to dominate English’s top lexical contest. Last November, for the final of Scrabble’s 32-round World Championship in Australia, Nigeria’s winningest wordsmith, Wellington Jighere, defeated Britain’s Lewis Mackay, in a victory that led morning news broadcasts in his homeland half a world away.

Jamey Stegmaier shows us how to teach Scythe
It's really cool that Jamey understands his audience on YouTube so well, that those watching his channel are probably the ones who will be teaching the game. Does anyone know of any other designers/publishers who do this?

The Landlord’s Game
From rock-paper-scissors, to tennis, to Mario Kart, every game is a designed system and all games are grounded in the same design principles. One popular game in particular has a mixed reputation with game players and designers alike: Monopoly. Participants circle the board, buy property, build houses, collect money, draw cards and pay money when landing on a space owned by another player. The game can be slow, and its endings can be dark—the game ends when a player goes into total bankruptcy. Yet this was not always the case.

The best board games we played at PAX Unplugged
PAX branched out from video games into board games with last weekend's PAX Unplugged, a celebration of all things tabletop. The show was packed with gamers, but we fought the hordes for table space on which to try some of the newest releases. As with any con of this scale, there were bound to be disappointments—we simply ran out of time to try things like Merlin and Transatlantic and Ex Libris and Queendomino. But we did get in plenty of sessions with great new games; here are some of our favorites from the show.

Playing the Dying Game – The Last Days of Mojang’s Scrolls
Scrolls was a digital trading card and board game; players would collect cards that were creatures or structures or abilities, assemble these cards into decks and then do battle with other players on a board that was three tiles wide and five tiles long on either side. The game was built upon a simple premise, but was designed for complex and engrossing play. At its best, it was welcoming and accessible to beginners while remaining challenging for advanced players. ...Scrolls was my favorite game, and in memory of it, I’ve chronicled its last days.
