Schoolcraft College’s renowned culinary arts department is headed to the bar. The Livonia-based community college is offering a brewing and distillation certificate, starting this fall. The 24-credit program will train fledgling brewers in various skills with courses like brewing science, brewhouse operations and technology, beer styles and flavors and more.

When the State College Brew Expo started 17 years ago, brewers were begging organizers to be part of it. Now, with the craft beer explosion, it’s the other way around. This year’s brew expo, held Aug. 15 at Tussey Mountain, will feature about 40 breweries ranging from local favorites like Otto’s to national names Goose Island and Yards. More than half of those are Pennsylvania breweries, festival organizer Mike Martin said.

Four Peaks Brewing Co. of Tempe had the No. 1 ranking in the Phoenix Business Journal’s inaugural Arizona Breweries list on tap, and was well in front of the field when the list was published today. The list was ranked by number of barrels of beer brewed in 2014, as reported by The Brewers Association. Four Peaks had 2014 production of 58,630 barrels, besting runner up SanTan Brewing Co. of Chandler (23,301) and Grand Canyon Brewery Co. of Williams (8,500).
